Fido: the Dog, and the Meaning of one of the Most Popular Dog Names in the World

It’s such a popular dog name, we thought we’d do some hunting around and find out what it really means.

The Meaning of Fido

Fido as a name for boys has its root in Latin. Fido means to be "faithful".

Fido is a version, with the suffix-o, of Fidel (Latin): from the Latin names Fidelis.

So, it makes sense to call an animal like a dog renown for its faithfulness and loyalty, Fido.

A Famous Fido

Fido was the name of an Italian dog who lived from 1941 until June 9, 1958.

He was part Italian Greyhound and Pointer.

He became famous in 1943 because of his loyalty to his dead master.

At the time, Fido was written about in many Italian and international magazines and newspapers, appeared in newsreels throughout Italy, and was bestowed several honors, including a public statue erected in his honor.

Death Comes to Fido's Owner

On December 30, 1943 the Italian town of Borgo San Lorenzo was repeatedly bombed.

It was during the Second World War, and the bombardment hit many factories. Sadly, many of the workers at a brick making factory were killed including Fido’s owner, Carlo Soriani.

Carlo had found Fido lying injured on the road, and taken him home to nurse him back to health when the dog was only a puppy.

Loyal to his Last Breath

As in similar stories, Fido showed up at the bus stop to wait for his owner.

When he didn’t get off the bus, Fido went home.

However, he never forgot and spent the next 14 years returning to the bus stop to wait. Apparently, this occurred more than 5,000 times.

Then one day the loyal dog passed away at the very spot where he had waited each day for his beloved master.

Fido to the last.
